Excerpt –The Escape
My
heart was thumping in my chest. There was a sound that cracked through the
night from far away. A gun? They had a gun?! “Get up!” a voice ordered as someone
threw themselves at me.
An
arm flung around my shoulder and wrapped around my chest
and
yanked me to the side and against a hard yet built chest. My face was pressed
against their arm. They smelt of sweat and pine. We were pressed up against the
wall behind the factory; that much I knew. My eyes slowly traveled up as I
caught my breath. Mike. Of course. But the strange part was that it was only
the two of us. The others were nowhere in sight. I pressed my hands against
Mike’s chest to pry myself away from him, but he smashed me back to his chest
and forced a hand over my
mouth
to silence me. It was partly covering my nose as well, making it hard to
breathe. That’s when I heard the voices again. This time they were extremely
close just around the corner of the factory. It was dark enough that we were
hidden from view. But it was also quiet enough that we could easily be heard if
we even made a sound. My heart beat was thumping so
loudly
in my ears that for a moment I pondered if the two guards could hear it as
well.
“They
couldn’t have gotten far,” the woman hissed.
“How
the hell could they have gotten away?” Slap!
The
woman gasped loudly and it took a second for her to respond.
“What
the hell? If you ever lay a hand on me again, I swear I will kill you!
It
wasn’t my fault!”
“It
was your turn to supervise! Now you’ve let a pre-guard—if he was even a real
guard—and a bunch of nasty little teenagers run away! You shouldn’t even be working
here!”
